Our favorite hotel discovery of the year: The Ottmanngut Suite & Breakfast in Merano, South Tyrol – a Bed & Breakfast, or rather, a “temporary home” that meets our ever growing longings for a timeout – for rest and retreat, for authenticity and simplicity, for tradition and modernity with lightness, slowness and love – paired with inspirational talks under palm trees & cypress trees in the sight of the magnificent South Tyrolean mountain scenery.
Upon arrival, host family Kirchlechner makes you feel right at home. And has done so since mid 19th century. Back then Martin Kirchlechner’s great-great-grandfather acquired the altmeraner estate, which dates back to the 13th century, along with a gorgeous Mediterranean garden and charming vineyard. Thus, through many decades the family built an idyllic oasis in the middle of Meran.
Everywhere you look and feel – everywhere is history. Is quality. Is care. Is lifeblood. Is soul. Starting with the original Merano furniture to paintings to books, lamps, mirrors and crockery.
A look at the 9 lovingly decorated rooms reveals – here are lovers of antiques and modern design at home. Flooded with light, the individual suites welcome you with natural oak flooring, exposed stone walls, functional tiled stoves, light linen curtains, antique clawfood bathtub or a private garden and private access to the vineyard.
For breakfast guests are seated in the garden. Or in the Orangerie. Bringing a lot of time. Because Ottmanngut lives and eats “Slow Food“: A daily changing 3-course breakfast allows to start the day slowly. Regional and quality (if possible) organic products are individually prepared and served with a little story by Martin and his good friend Ivo (president of Slow Food South Tyrol) personally – best alpine butter from a local dairy, freshly prepared Bircher muesli, egg dishes in the glass, mountain cheese and many other creative delicacies delight for hours. Our tip: Explore the basement aka the Treasury of Ottmanngut after breakfast …
And then go enjoy all that nature offers at Ottmanngut: Hike up the vineyard. Or lounge in the garden. Surrounded by palm trees, citrus trees, cypresses, oleander, rhododendron, hydrangea, lavender and jasmine you can indulge your love for the magical Mediterranean climate. And ponder how many days you could probably put off your boss, to extend your stay at Ottmanngut … because you will really want to, we promise.
Ps. Occasionally Ottmanngut hosts concerts or readings under the stars – in order not to miss the announcements, follow Martin and the Ottmanngut Suite & Breakfast via Facebook.
