The most spectacular new opening fills a gap in Basel’s scene. The Volkshaus (people’s house) is a café, a brasserie, a beer garden and center for culture offering a relaxed cool chic.
It is the first gastronomic concept that the star architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed – and put them on a non-color and infinity. The complete set is painted black bar N01 , with round tables , an elongated bar and small booths . In the morning you can coffee be served a croissant , then have lunch and in the evening with a cocktail .
Through the Bar N01 through we in the brasserie, where the tables are set white , large bulbs hanging from the ceiling – and repeated in a mirrored wall to infinity.
In the Volkshaus, whose history can be traced back to the 14th century, today it is far nobler than back in the days, but also quite calm. On the menu you find steak frites, the meat comes from local butchers, and it is cooked seasonal. The classic: meatloaf , perfectly spiced, a highlight: the crème brulee with ginger and lemongrass.
On warm days, you can still move outside to the beer garden in the courtyard, there are concerts, a library is under construction – and from 2015 you can stay at the Volkshaus’ own hotel.
