LIVE IN MATM
MAR & APR 2014 IN MUNICH, VIENNA & ZURICH
You know how they say one sees only what one wants to see. It’s called selective perception.
So, sprinting through my neighbourhood on this beautiful sunny day en route to meet a friend for lunch, I rushed past a gigantic blue poster that had a ton of words in big letters printed on it but funnily enough my eyes only read the words HAPPINESS and DAY.
To add to the magic, today, me and you and everyone we know are celebrating the release of HUNDREDS’ sophomore album “Aftermath” on one of the most progressive and artist focused labels out there, Sinnbus Records.
Hundreds are sibling duo Eva and Philipp Milner from Hamburg, Germany. Despite releasing their debut album in 2010, they have maintained a mysterious reputation in the age of overload, a sweet authentic reputation, that stems from the organically grown love of so many people around them and their loyal fans. From writing first lyrics in their Hamburg bedrooms to perfoming on the stages of international festivals like SXSW (US), Iceland Airwaves and The Great Escape (UK) the siblings’ bedroom project evolved into a veritable family business in just a couple of years.
They share a similar instrumental palate with Massive Attack, but offer a more subtly dark and spacious kind of electronic music blending post rock, synth pop, R’n’B, folk and electronics, that is now modern pop music’s state of the art – with international artists like James Blake on one side of the spectrum and Woodkid on the other.
Eighteen months Eva and Philipp spent working on “Aftermath”. They set up a tiny studio outside of Hamburg, in the countryside. Going into the production of “Aftermath” working so closely with her brother every day, Eva said “There’ll be fights and there’ll be light.” Since the recordings of the debut album “Hundreds”, both had changed and had grown out of the dark and melancholy feel of their debut. “More often than not we’ll take a song we thought we had finished and we’ll change it eight times over, discard it, rediscover it, tear it apart and rock it to sleep and decorate it with gold and throw mud at it. And then it will sound amazing and look really hot. Then we’ll throw a party for it and bounce it.”
Filled with stories of opening up, setting boundaries, letting go, growing up, farewells and new beginnings, “Aftermath” embraces the unique universe of impermanence, leaving listeners elated, relieved and ready to open new chapters in life.
Moving on is more valuable than ever – and impermanence has never sounded so good.
