Disclosure live March 16th, 2014 at Gasometer in Vienna
One of the many unspoken rules when out on the road – on tour – with a band is that whoever takes over the driving gets to choose the music played on the stereo. Sure, sometimes, that can cause some raised eyebrows. Much more likely however, you’ll discover a fantastic new band you had never heard of before. This happened last October/November when I was tourmanaging Canadian indie folksters, Folly & The Hunter. Phil, who has a unique fondness for electronic music, decided to put on some ‘uplifting’ music for the 10-hour drive along the Italian Riviera, picking tracks from Moderat, Jon Hopkins and Disclosure. Moderat & Jon Hopkins, I was familiar with. Disclosure not so much.
Disclosure is a duo from the UK, Howard and Guy Lawrence. They are so young – ca. 20 years old – I almost don’t know whether to be happy or sorry for them, looking at their tour schedule of the past 3 years since starting out. It’s intense. Europe, Australia, UK, back to the States, a constant zigzag, sometimes flying back and forth playing 3 festivals on different continents in 1 weekend.
At Coachella in California, they CLOSED the festival AFTER the Red Hot Chili Peppers had played their headline set. Upon release, their debut album ‘Settle’ became some sort of global sensation with Pitchfork rejoicing: “One of the most assured, confident debuts from any genre in recent memory” – Pitchfork, 9.1 [Best New Music]. The album has meanwhile been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Album. ‘Nuff said. Check for yourself:
The speed of their momentum is pretty mind blowing to me but then again, these kids are British and the industry just works different over there. When people LOVE a band, it seems the whole island agrees and supports them, with massive nominations for NME & Brit Awards consequently following the public praise. Or vice versa.
This week, the band embarks on a short tour playing a handful of shows in continental Europe: Warsaw, Leipzig, Prague, Milan, Eindhoven aaaaaaand Vienna, at the stunning Gasometer, promoted by our pals at Skalar Music.
