LIVE IN MATM
MAR 2014 IN ZURICH & MUNICH
One of the main questions remaining about modern pop music is: how do musicians from the far north manage to educe such musical warmth from electronic instruments.
Let’s look at Chvrches: Three people from sparse and beautiful Scotland trying their luck in various musical formats when, in 2012, they locked themselves away in a rehearsal room and re-apperared with a single, followed by an album that consisted of computer sounds, razor-sharp synth sounds and a female voice. Combining all these, they managed to create such musical warmth, making people in all imaginable regions of the world storm the dance floors in euphoric melancholy.
Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty und Iain Cook’s first song was called “Lies” – a cracking stamping hit. It immediately got what the Brits call ‘hyped’. The songs that followed were even more tenderly pixelated and the hype remained. A tour supporting Depeche Mode throughout the US followed, sold-out solo gigs too – in the US, Europe and Australia.
Maybe the 80s vibes make this music fit our zeitgeist, but probably it’s the melancholy that the band sometimes talks about. Beauty with flaws and doubts is after all the most credible kind. This is exactly what Chvrches bring to the dance floors.
Chvrches will play a few concerts in the MATM region:
March 22, 2014 Zurich – Komplex
March 24, 2014 Munich – Muffathalle
There are very few music lovers I wouldn’t recommend these concerts to. Just the right amount of indie, electronic music and depth for everyone. Maybe you will have even more fun at the shows knowing this: hype or no-hype, Doherty, Mayberry and Co. are superbly humble and nice people. At least they were, when I was allowed to talk to them in fall.
If you don’t believe me, you can read for yourself: the band still answers questions on Facebook. Nordic friendliness, electronically.
